The National Coalition to Protect Student Privacy – Focused on the release of student’s ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery; “boot camp SAT”) scores to DoD, including students’ profile data, without students’ or parental consent.

The Committee Opposed to Militarism and the Draft (COMD) – School district policies, articles and other documents relating to military recruitment and counter-recruitment in schools

Before You Enlist – Short videos (english and spanish versions) with interviews of younger veterans explaining many facets of military service, including job assignments, base assignments, medical care, college funding, military training, and others. This should be mandatory viewing for anyone in high school who is considering joining the military.

Military Recruiting in the United States – This is by far the most current and comprehensive text on military recruiting, written by long-time student privacy advocate, Pat Elder. Everyone involved in TiR and CR work would benefit by reading it.

American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) – Providing Peaceful Alternatives for Youth

Voices for National Service – A coalition of organizations that believe citizens are central to solving the problems facing their communities. Together, they urge leaders in Washington and around the country to expand national service, a vital resource for strengthening communities and the nation.

TiR Web Resources Handout – This has web links to various resources, divided up by categories of TiR; Resistance & Peace; College Funding; and Job Training/Volunteerism.  We like to direct students’ attention to the “about.com” link on “What the recruiter never told you.”  This is set up for double-sided printing.

Enlistment Agreement Handout – This alerts students to certain provisions within the enlistment agreement.  Very important for them to understand what is guaranteed and what is not.  The handout refers to the Enlistment Document DD FORM 4-1 which is current as of Nov. 2012.  The most current version can be found here.

The 1986 9th U.S.  Court of Appeals, 9th Circuit ruling (SAN DIEGO COMMITEE v.  GOVERNING BD.) which authorized counter recruiting groups’ equal access to schools as recruiters.

Countering the Militarisation of Youth – A project of War Resisters’ International which seeks to identify and challenge the many ways in which young people around the world are encouraged to accept the military and military values as normal, and worthy of their uncritical support. Militarisation is a process which goes far beyond overt recruitment. It includes the presence and influence of the armed forces in education, public military events such as parades, and military-themed video games.

Don’t Enlist, But Don’t Just Take My Word For It – A page on the DandelionSalad blog with a wealth of resources including books, films, etc.

Anybody’s Son Will Do (1983; must-see) – A very hard-to-find short (57-min)  documentary that depicts the Marine boot camp experience. Some shocking interviews from the drill instructors about e.g., brainwashing. This is very worth your time, trust us. The film is split into 6 bite-sized parts on YouTube.
