default A guide to working with School Boards Popular

By 9887 downloads

The people who constitute your school board are volunteers, unpaid and with varying degrees of ability and education. In some districts they are often there out of sheer frustration with the previous board. At some point members concluded the only way needed changes would be implemented was by running for office and being elected. In major metropolitan areas, political power is a strong consideration. In a few districts, widespread corruption as well as fraudulent use and theft of taxpayers money has been documented.

(Proposed by the Montgomery County Coalition on Recruitment Issues, MCCRI)

School districts throughout the country are revising their procedures on military recruiting in response to the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB), as well as concerns of parents, students, and civic associations such as the National PTA [1].

Generally, these procedures cover four broad areas of concern: Student privacy; Recruiter access to students; Use of the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) for recruiting purposes; and Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (JROTC).

In December, 2010, Northwest Suburban Peace & Education Project presented a proposal to the school board of Township District 214 to offer the students and parents in the district a method by which they can opt out of the JAMRS database. In a letter dated March 21, 2011, they have decided to offer opt out forms in the registration materials.

Township District 214 includes six high schools (about 12,000 students) from the towns of Arlington Heights, Mt. Prospect, Elk Grove Village, Wheeling, Buffalo Grove and Rolling Meadows. These are suburbs northwest of Chicago.

New York City is the largest school system in the country with 1 million students and over 450 high schools. It has taken 6 years, but we (Ya-Ya Network & the Students or Soldiers? Coalition) FINALLY got a Chancellor's Regulation on recruiters in schools. While it is not perfect, it is still one of the most progressive policies in the country.

We hope that folks in other parts of the country will be able to use it as a precident when they approach their own school boards. Please feel free to contact us if you want more information. This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. 239-0022.

PJC STUDENT PRIVACY BUSD RESOLUTION NO. 11-10 09222010 FINAL.pdf

BUSD (Berkeley) has just passed a sister resolution to the OUSD Resolution protecting students form the JAMRS database that we passed last year.  This was after a 2 year campaign that paved the way for Oakland to pass our resolution.  Now it has gained momentum and sister districts seem very willing to follow suit.

SFUSD (San Francisco) will also vote on a JAMRS resolution next week so we are slowly making the BAY-Area an unwelcoming zone to JAMRS and the ways it invades young people's privacy to make them easier to recruit.

Please consider working with your local board of ed to pass a similar resolution.  When framed as a student privacy issue it seems uncontroversial and yet it is a very practical way to undercut aggressive recruitment in public schools.
Attached is the BUSD Resolution signed.

default San Diego Unified School District Administrative Proceedure on Military Recruiting Policies Popular

By 5681 downloads

San Diego school district's policy on recruiting activities. It was not written until the Education Not Arms Coalition had complained about violations of the recruiting policy approved by the school board in November 2010. (We have requested other actions to address the policy violations besides the administrative procedure and are waiting for a full response.

Unfortunately, the administrative procedure conflicts with the school board's policy in a few places, so we have had to send a letter to the superintendent requesting revisions. As counter-recruitment activists have discovered, the struggle for proper implementation is almost as challenging as getting such policies adopted. Hopefully we'll get the necessary revisions and then we can circulate the document more widely.

pdf Seattle Equal Access policy Popular

Recruiters of all types (employment, education, service opportunities, military, or military
alternatives) shall be given equal access to Seattle Public Schools high schools. Each
school shall determine the frequency with which recruiters may visit, but in order to be
in compliance with the equal access rule, no recruiter shall have the opportunity to visit
any single campus more frequently than any other recruiter. For the purposes of this
policy, each branch of the military is considered to be a separate recruiting
organization.
