 Confronting Militarization: A Call to Action

In an era defined by perpetual and preemptive warfare, it is more vital than ever to reflect on the legacy of peace activism and recognize the courageous efforts unfolding today. As our society increasingly prioritizes securitization, we risk eroding democratic institutions under the guise of stability.

This section of the NNOMY website highlights the work of demilitarization and peace organizations, showcasing the activists behind them and the creative campaigns they lead. These efforts aim to raise public awareness about the militarization of our schools and youth—and to offer tangible strategies for resistance. Government and private sector defense and intelligence programs, operating in a cycle of self-perpetuation, have fostered a deep cultural crisis rooted in militarization.

Activists are challenging initiatives like the expanding Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC), which funnels youth—often from underserved communities—into a system of military indoctrination. They are also opposing school-based shooting ranges, Pentagon data-mining of student information, aggressive recruitment tactics, and the infiltration of militarized STEM curricula (DoD STEM) into public education. Even violent, league-based computer gaming is now being used as a recruitment tool.

Beyond education, these advocates are confronting human rights violations embedded in programs such as selective service registration, mandatory ASVAB testing, and JAMRS data collection—all of which compromise student and parental privacy.

Looking ahead, the emergence of a new generation of activists will be essential to continue this resistance and expand the strategies needed to challenge the growing militarization of our public commons. This movement must be supported by a concerned and engaged public if we are to preserve any hope of building a sustainable world—one that is environmentally responsible and grounded in respect for human rights.

The time to act for peace and justice is now.
