Vietnam veteran speaks to Binghamton high school students about war experience
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - A Vietnam vet on a journey to help those battling PTSD made a stop at Binghamton High School today. Frank Romeo spoke with juniors about his experiences serving during the Vietnam War and his lifelong battle with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Beginning on March 1st, the day of his 70th birthday, Romeo began a 750 mile three month walk across New York State The US Army Vet is visiting 25 homeless shelters to talk with homeless veterans about the disorder. Romeo has been working with people with PTSD for 30 years and says he figured walking across the state would be a great way to bring attention to the issue.
He says the stigma around mental illness is hurting veterans.

Veterans for Peace #035 Spokane Washington - Painfully acquainted with the use and misuse of weapons, Spokane Veterans for Peace strongly opposes the introduction of more weapons into our schools. Weapons endanger our children, not protect them, and have a track record of turning simple arguments and accidents into heartbreaking tragedy. More convincingly than any curricula, the employment of firearms in Spokane schools teach students to value violence as a means to an end and have no place in civilized society, let alone our student bodies.

Student Response to We Are Not Your Soldiers
World Can't Wait - “Just wanted to thank you AGAIN for spending a truly engaging, thought-provoking day with us. The work you do is incredibly vital for young people like my students, all of whom were enthusiastic, moved, and grateful in their responses when I asked them for their thoughts on your visit in class the next day. I’m constantly trying to raise consciousness (and consciences…), but it is often a tough, uphill trek, so I’m happy to have your help in the mission. I would love to have you back next year sometime to meet a new batch of students! In the meantime, please keep doing the work you’re doing — I know how exhausting it is but I promise you it is worth it!”
What was striking — after seeing this range of students in terms of diversity and age level and types of schools — is how little they know about U.S. military policies, of the wars in which this country is engaged and of what is being carried out in our names. What these students heard was, for the most part, new and impactful to them.
Although a lot of the students had family members and/or friends who have served in military, either in recent years or a while ago — few, if any, had talked with those relatives or friends about what they had experienced. This is generally due to the traumatic nature of those experiences which make them so difficult to talk about and why it is so important that the veterans who work with the We Are Not Your Soldiers project are willing and able to do this, which is not at all an easy thing to do. In some college classes, for example, where there were a few veterans, the former military members didn’t say very much but nodded their heads in agreement through much of the presentations

PEACE CAMP: Building Bridges 2019
San Diego First Church of the Brethren - Peace Camp is a week long summer activity camp that introduces children and youth to the concepts of cooperation, collective projects, learning about seeing and hearing more fully, and obtaining the tools of critical thinking. Students are taught that creative thinking is a road to understanding and building peacful relationships.
