In advance of the next NNOMY newsletter themed, January 18 2020: The New Face of Military Recruiting, NNOMY takes a look back at counter military recruitment practice and issues in the past decade to review where we have been as we anticipate a new decade ahead for counter recruitment activism. A revealed cyber strategy of the Pentagon recruiting command's plans to generate military recruits from Generation Z and those youth that have grown up in a world of virtual realities will confront our struggle forward.

Stretched to supply the manpower to fight two wars, the US military has stepped up efforts to recruit teenagers and young adults. Video-games, social networks, and the schools themselves are all fertile soil for Pentagon recruiters. Questions are being asked about a key military recruitment tool used in the nation's high schools.

The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) exam is a series of tests designed to assess a child's suitability for various careers in the armed forces. However, a recent report by the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child raised concerns about how the information gathered in these tests is used.

Should We End Military Recruiting in High Schools as a Matter of Child Protection and Public Health? (2011)

American Public Health Association - Recruiters for the various US armed forces have free access to our nation's high schools, as mandated by the No Child Left Behind Act. Military recruiter behaviors are disturbingly similar to predatory grooming.

Adults in the active military service are reported to experience increased mental health risks, including stress, substance abuse, and suicide, and the youngest soldiers consistently show the worst health effects, suggesting military service is associated with disproportionately poor health for this population.
We describe the actions of a high school parent teacher student association in Seattle, Washington, which sought to limit the aggressive recruitment of children younger than 18 years into the military.

Counter-recruitment refers to activity opposing military recruitment, in some or all of its forms. Among the methods used are research, consciousness-raising, political advocacy and direct action. Most such activity is a response to recruitment by state armed forces, but may also target intelligence agencies, private military companies, and non-state armed groups.
