Every US military recruit is trained tofight and to kill and obligated to eight years of enlistment.
Ongoing conflicts today prove that deployment can happen at any time. You owe it to yourself to consider the many alternatives that do not restrict your life options. - Learn more
Parents
Enlisting in the military has been sold for generations as a way to grow up, get a start in life, maybe learn a skill and be part of a noble cause.
If you have kids today, recruiters will tell that familiar story. But today, less and less of it is true. - Learn more
Teachers and community
Based on years of experience in public schools, facilitating student organizations dealing with peace (i.e. peace clubs) in your area can have a transformative impact on student autonomy and school culture around pervasive militarism. Learn more
Who we are
TheNational Network Opposing the Militarization of Youth (NNOMY) is a network of organizations that organizes against the militarization of schools and young people in the United States.
NNOMY brings local, regional, and national peace and human rights groups together to connect youth to pathways towards meaningful lives, as alternatives to military enlistment.
"The U.S. military is deeply embedded in public schools, shaping children’s futures long before they’re old enough to understand the consequences — and parents were never meaningfully asked."
NNOMY was founded in the aftermath of the 2004 national counter-recruitment conference "Stopping War Where it Begins" in Philadelphia.[1] It is intended to be a decentralized and flexible structure that helps national, regional and local activists and organizations by promoting communication efforts and by stimulating collaboration between network members. NNOMY organizes actions and campaigns against militarism in order to raise awareness and to increase education on the topic.
The World Can’t Wait organizes people living in the United States to repudiate and stop the fascist direction initiated by the Bush Regime, including: the murderous, unjust and illegitimate occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan; the global “war of terror” of torture, rendition and spying; and the culture of bigotry, intolerance and greed. This direction cannot and will not be reversed by leaders who tell us to seek common ground with fascists, religious fanatics, and empire. It can only be possible by the people building a community of resistance - an independent mass movement of people - acting in the interests of humanity to stop, and demand prosecution, of these crimes.
Summary describing your organization: Most schools around the country are struggling with fewer teachers and reduced resources to try to meet the critical needs of their students. But one thing is not in short supply. That's the military recruiters who stalk the hallways of far too many urban and rural public high schools and community colleges. We Are Not Your Soldiers is an initiative of World Can't Wait that brings anti-war veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars together with activists to talk about the reality of these wars in classrooms and to counter the dangerous deceptions served up by recruiters. This is truly a life-changing experience for many young people who are encouraged to ask their most difficult questions of young women and men who just a few years ago were students like them, considering what to do with their lives and are now committed to ending the wars they saw first hand. We have visited schools in New York City, Connecticut, rural Maine, Chicago, the Bay area and Washington state. We want to expand the We Are Not Your Soldiers project and reach out to more schools and more students and young people.
