Stop Stealing Our Futures - NNOMY School Counter-Recruitment Webinar

  español -

May, 14, 2026 / NNOMY Administration / National Network Opposing the Militarization of Youth -  These are trying times. DHS agencies and the military are invading our communities. Our military is waging war or threatening war on multiple fronts.

Meanwhile, in order to maintain such an active presence on the world stage, the military needs more recruits. Recruiters are appearing at our schools, community meetings, social media, on our phones, everywhere it seems.

At the same time, the number of groups actively involved in counter recruitment has never been needed more. The National Network Opposing Militarization of Youth (NNOMY) is pushing against that trend as activist groups spark into action. We cannot wait three years for a change. Too much is at stake.

We are planning a SECOND webinar Saturday, June 13th, 2026 building on our first and we invite you to participate. No prior attendance necessary. Take a deeper look at proven strategies. Each section is presented by people that have been deeply involved in this work for a significant period.

Your attendance is vital. Big or small, everything we do helps prevent a young person from making a decision they may regret (and often do).  RSVP at https://tinyurl.com/demilitarizeJun13

First workshop session - 3 topics, select one

Gaining access to schools

Legal grounds for seeking school access, ruling out lawsuits, best approaches to seeking access, scope of legally allowable activities and types of speech, and what to avoid. Alternatives if access is not possible, including leafleting by nonstudents outside and students leafleting inside schools. More information sources.

Presenter(s): Rick

Alternative Career Paths

Learn how to find and contribute to non-military career paths and resources that offer ways to develop skills, learn and contribute to social change and well-being.

Presenter(s): Gary, Michelle

Classroom presentations

Learn how to organize classroom presentations to middle and high school students, to effectively convey veteran’s voices and offer young people a more balanced view on enlistment.

Presenter(s): Siri, Before Enlisting

Second time block – 4 topics, select one

Restricting JROTC

In this workshop we present an overview of the program, how it has grown to be in 3,600 high schools and how it contributes to the militarization of society. We will also discuss the challenges in organizing against it, including what has worked and not.

Presenter(s): Libby, Rick

Tabling at high schools

Tabling helps balance the military’s access to students by offering other options for education and job training, while also sharing honest information about recruitment. This breakout session gives you a chance to ask questions and learn about resources for tabling.

Presenter(s): Aneesa, Oren

Student clubs and actions

Students are hungry to discuss current issues. You can make a lasting impact on youth because students actually have more free speech rights than students. In this workshop you will learn how to change the culture of militarism in our schools from the inside. Starting a peace club allows students the opportunity to be heard and practice the skills of activism. Participants will receive a copy of activities, tips to have a successful club insights from experienced classroom teachers and receive on-going support.

Presenter(s): Pat Alviso and Bruhnke

Selective Service (Draft)

Young people and their parents are confused and worried by news about "automatic" draft registration. What's happening, what choices do young people have, and how can older people be their allies?

Presenter(s): Edward Hasbrouck

What Every Young Woman Should Know About the Military

What Every Young Woman Should Know About the Military

A Brochure for Young Women Thinking About Joining the Military | 2022

"When I joined, I knew that women in the military faced an uphill battle, but I didn't fully understand how serious the issues were and how reluctant leadership is to doing anything about it.

The truth is that there's a culture of harassment and assault that is incredibly harmful to all troops, but especially to gender minorities."
