Counter Military Recruitment

Counter-Recruitment from an Ethnic Studies Perspective

Thu, 11/05/2026 - 12:14pm by nnomyadmin

Lt. Col. Kourtney Logan and Maj. Martina TaylorCampbell are members of the U.S. Army 6th Medical Recruiting Battalion
Military recruitment is often presented as a matter of individual choice, patriotism, and opportunity. Recruiters highlight pathways to education, job training, healthcare benefits, and career advancement. Yet ethnic studies scholars encourage a broader examination of recruitment practices, asking who is most heavily targeted, what social conditions shape enlistment decisions, and how military service fits within larger systems of power. From this perspective, counter-recruitment emerges not simply as an anti-war activity, but as an educational and social justice effort aimed at exposing the racialized, economic, and political structures that sustain militarism.

Recruiter tal;ks to students at Wilkes Central High School in North Carolina
Aug. 30, 2008 / Associated Press / The Gainesville Sun - WILKESBORO, N.C. – Sally Ferrell bounded from the truck and grabbed a posterboard sign that read: "War is not the Answer." Over the years, she's organized dozens of peace vigils like this one being set up in a parking lot. Find common ground, she has always preached, and any conflict can be resolved. But she's now engaged in a conflict of her own — a dispute over military recruiting in high schools that has polarized rural Wilkes County. For three years, Ferrell has asked permission to distribute pamphlets and other materials that warn students to think twice before joining the military. But the school superintendent has stopped her, calling her activities unpatriotic. The American Civil Liberties Union, calling it a First Amendment issue, has threatened to sue.

What Every Young Woman Should Know About the Military

What Every Young Woman Should Know About the Military

A Brochure for Young Women Thinking About Joining the Military | 2022

"When I joined, I knew that women in the military faced an uphill battle, but I didn't fully understand how serious the issues were and how reluctant leadership is to doing anything about it.

The truth is that there's a culture of harassment and assault that is incredibly harmful to all troops, but especially to gender minorities."
