JROTC and Young Marines: Two Paths Into Military Culture — And Two Americas

Sat, 09/12/2026 - 9:55am by nnomyadmin

Across the United States, young people encounter military culture in very different ways. Some meet it in school, where JROTC is woven into the daily routine of classes, hallways, and assemblies. Others join the Young Marines, a community program that families choose because they already feel connected to Marine Corps identity. These two pathways look similar on the surface — uniforms, ranks, discipline — but they reach different communities, shape different identities, and reflect deep inequalities in how military influence spreads across the country. JROTC grows in schools serving Black and Latino youth. Young Marines grows in white suburban communities. Understanding why helps us understand how militarization works, and how youth can push back.

Militarization in a Tech Age: Why Youth Counter‑Recruitment Must Evolve.

Thu, 08/20/2026 - 8:21am by gdghirardi

Militarization today rarely announces itself in the ways previous generations learned to recognize. It no longer arrives through the familiar figure of a recruiter stationed behind a cafeteria table, waiting to make a pitch. Instead, it slips quietly into the digital spaces young people inhabit every day. It appears in the curated ads that follow them across platforms, in STEM programs whose funding sources remain carefully obscured, in video games designed to normalize the reflexes of remote warfare, and in job postings that promise purpose and stability without ever acknowledging the machinery of violence they ultimately support. Young people now live inside a technological environment where militarization is ambient, automated, and largely invisible, and counter‑recruitment must adapt to this new terrain if it hopes to remain relevant.

What Every Young Woman Should Know About the Military

A Brochure for Young Women Thinking About Joining the Military | 2022

"When I joined, I knew that women in the military faced an uphill battle, but I didn't fully understand how serious the issues were and how reluctant leadership is to doing anything about it.

The truth is that there's a culture of harassment and assault that is incredibly harmful to all troops, but especially to gender minorities."
