Summary describing your organization: The Ventura County Chapter 112 (VCVFP, chapter 112) was founded in August, 2004, as a result of the Iraq War begun in 2003. Once founded, Chapter 112 simultaneously began a focused program of disclosing military alternative careers to local area high school students. Known as counter recruiting we courteously invoke the designation, “informed enlistment”. VFP alternative to the military brochures can be found in local area high school career centers.

The local chapter continues to conduct educational forums and tabling informationals within the various County communities. Such informationals include tabling at events like the MLK, Jr. annual program, Earth Day, Multicultural Festival, Ojai Peace Day, Juneteenth Festival, Ventura College invitations, Native American Pow Wows, and more. When you join VFP, you join at the national office, subsequently, your membership is then routed to the roster of Chapter 112. Please visit the chapter 112 website at vfpvc.org. Summary describing your organization: World Can’t Wait’s We Are Not Your Soldiers project brings Iraq and Afghanistan-era veterans to classes to tell about the wars and what the military is recruiting for – information most have never been exposed to before. Often, we begin the presentation by showing a short video. Sometimes we use a version of “Collateral Murder” narrated by veteran Ethan McCord which contains footage, released by Chelsea Manning, of the Baghdad killing of Reuters journalists and others. Or we may show a clip from a feature film on a drone pilot stationed at a base here in the United States or another video. The veterans talk about their on-the-ground experiences in occupying countries, where civilians pay the price.  In-service and post-service issues such PTSD, medical/psychological care or lack thereof and homelessness are also addressed as well as the realities of advertised benefits, such as college tuition. Students are provided with information and a perspective to which they may not otherwise be exposed. There is an additional possibility to do a historical presentation with a Vietnam military resister and/or veteran. This can be done in conjunction with the recent veteran’s class visit or separately.

Summary Describing Your Organization:

Feminists Against the Draft is a coalition of intersectional feminists and feminist allies who raise awareness about the military draft and oppose any attempts to expand Selective Service registration, with the ultimate goal of abolition of the draft. We believe a person’s desire to enter or oppose the U.S. military is hugely personal, we advocate for the rights of women and children domestically and abroad, and we emphasize the need for progress rather than “inclusion” for marginalized groups in unjust systems. As an organization started by and made up primarily of young people, we are importantly committed to lifting up the voices of young women and girls, queer people and BIPOC, and working class people. We particularly emphasize the importance of students and young people in building an inter-generational movement to end the draft that targets them. We also consider the over-recruitment of low-income Americans a disturbing iteration of the draft—the poverty draft—targeting marginalized and vulnerable people, and we push against military recruitment in our schools and communities. This group began at Dartmouth College in 2021, on the cusp of U.S. Supreme Court’s consideration of the case National Coalition for Men v. Selective Service System, a significant case regarding women and U.S. draft registration. Membership is open to anyone committed to pushing for the abolition of the Selective Service System or opposing draft expansion from a feminist perspective.
